En 1731, la Compagnie des Indes achète un terrain pour y installer un hôpital, remis au roi en 1764 et complété par de nombreuses autres constructions au cours de la seconde moitié du 18e siècle. En 1826, l'ingénieur Spinasse envisage de reconstruire l'hôpital à l'extérieur de la ville, mais le projet n'est pas accepté. En 1829, l'ingénieur Jean-Baptiste Dumas obtient le maintien de l'hôpital sur son site. Il fixe le plan en U avec disposition des constructions de part et d'autre de vastes cours plantées.
