Historique
L'usine sucrière du Baril est construite entre 1861 et 1863 par Jacques-Henri Montbel Fontaine, maire de Saint-Philippe entre 1842 et 1850. Rachetée par le Crédit foncier colonial en 1868, la sucrerie ferme ses portes en 1887. Elle est transformée en féculerie de manioc en 1919 avant d'être ruinée par le cyclone de 1932 et définitivement abandonnée.

History
The sugar refinery of Baril was built between 1861 and 1863 by Jacques-Henri Montbel Fontaine, mayor of Saint-Philippe between 1842 and 1850. Bought back by the Colonial Land Credit in 1868, the refinery closed its doors in 1887. It was converted into a manioc starch factory in 1919 before being ruined by the 1932 cyclone and permanently abandoned.
