Historique
Le phare est construit pointe de Bel Air à Sainte-Suzanne, sur un promontoire naturel situé face aux récifs de la Marianne et du Cousin, seuls écueils notables de la côte nord de l'île. L'ouvrage est constitué de la tour du phare flanquant, au nord, le bâtiment de service de plan quadrangulaire. Une cuisine est construite en bordure du terrain, à l'ouest. Le terrain est fermé par un muret de clôture, à l'est et à l'ouest. L'ensemble des constructions est en maçonnerie de moellons enduits ; soubassement, chaînes d'angle, astragale et chemin de ronde sont en pierre de taille. Le bâtiment de service est couvert en béton armé ; la cuisine en tôle ondulée ; la lanterne du phare en tôles plates. La tour du phare est construite en forme de colonne tronconique, d'ordre toscan, avec astragale et tailloir dodécagonal servant de chemin de ronde. L'accès à la lanterne se fait par un escalier hélicoïdal autrefois en bois, aujourd'hui métallique. La lanterne actuellement en place est une ancienne lanterne à huile et à pétrole qui a été électrifiée. Le bâtiment de service a été agrandi par l'ajout de deux pièces à l'est. Dans la cour, où d'anciens bâtiments annexes accolés au bâtiment de service ont été démolis, s'élève l'ancienne cuisine. Le phare de Bel Air est le seul ouvrage de ce type subsistant à La Réunion.

History
The lighthouse is built at the point of Bel Air at Sainte-Suzanne, on a natural promontory situated facing the reefs of the Marianne and the Cousin, the only notable hazards on the north coast of the island. The structure consists of the lighthouse tower flanking, to the north, the service building of quadrangular plan. A kitchen is built on the edge of the land, to the west. The land is enclosed by a boundary wall, to the east and west. All the constructions are in render rubble stone masonry; the base, corner chains, astragal and walkway are in ashlar. The service building is covered in reinforced concrete; the kitchen in corrugated sheet; the lighthouse lantern in flat sheet. The lighthouse tower is constructed in the form of a truncated tronconical column, of Tuscan order, with astragal and a dodecagonal abacus serving as a walkway. Access to the lantern is by a helicoidal staircase formerly in wood, today metallic. The lantern currently in place is an old oil and petroleum lantern which has been electrified. The service building has been enlarged by the addition of two rooms to the east. In the courtyard, where old ancillary buildings attached to the service building have been demolished, stands the old kitchen. The lighthouse of Bel Air is the only surviving structure of this type at La Réunion.
