La grotte des Cottès est située sur la rive gauche de la Gartempe, à un kilomètre au nord du village de Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé. Le porche de la grotte, dégagé au cours des fouilles réalisées au XIXe siècle, ouvre sur la vallée. La grotte compte deux salles et s'enfonce perpendiculairement à l'axe de la falaise. En avant du porche se développe un vaste talus qui présente un grand intérêt. La grotte des Cottès et son talus forment en effet une des rares archéo-séquences d'Europe occidentale couvrant totalement la fin du Paléolithique moyen et le début du Paléolithique supérieur (autour de 35/37000 ans) ; elle permet ainsi de mieux connaître l'époque qui a vu disparaître les derniers néandertaliens au profit du type humain actuel.

History
The Grotte des Cottès is situated on the left bank of the Gartempe, one kilometre north of the village of Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé. The cave entrance, cleared during excavations carried out in the 19th century, opens onto the valley. The cave has two chambers and extends perpendicular to the axis of the cliff face. In front of the entrance develops a vast talus which is of great interest. The Grotte des Cottès and its talus form one of the rare archaeo-sequences of Western Europe covering entirely the end of the Middle Palaeolithic and the beginning of the Upper Palaeolithic (around 35/37000 years ago); it thus allows better understanding of the period which saw the disappearance of the last Neanderthals in favour of the present human type.
