Saint-Amans-de-Pellagal is located to the south-west of the pays de Vaux, the lower Quercy, which comprises numerous castra. Haut-Castel, cited in various texts since the 10th century under the names of Hautmont, Aucastels then Haut Castel, would be a former defensive post of the Durfort family, passed to the Loubéjac by marriage. In 1230, Arnaud Gausbert de Castagner married Alix de Loubéjac, lady of Haut Castel, and took possession of the castle. The Castagner are mentioned regularly from 1085 alongside the most powerful figures of the pays de Vaux. Haut Castel remained in the Castagner family until 1614 when it was bombarded for three days following a dispute over inheritance between Antoine de Castagner and his sister-in-law. It was subsequently left abandoned and a new castle was built on the neighbouring hill around 1760.

The motte castrale, located at the place called Vieux Château, is established to the north-east of the village. Erected at the southern extremity of a promontory which dominates the valley of the Barguelonne, it is supported to the north on a limestone spur. The oval platform of the motte measures 60 m long and 35 m wide. The site retains the remains of two towers which are shown on the 1835 cadastre (the second - in stone - is no longer represented on the current cadastre). The better-preserved tower, built on the platform at the summit, is constructed in foreign brick. According to its construction method and its dimensions - of square plan, its sides measure 5.80 m long, the walls have a thickness of 0.90 m and it exceeds 10 m in height to the ridge beam - it would date from the late 12th or early 13th century. The second tower, semi-circular, rests against the west slope of the motte. Its dimensions are substantially equal to the previous one but it measures only 4.50 m high. Consisting of roughly dressed rubble stone facing covered with a very regular stone dressing (approximately 20 × 30 cm), it could be a new enclosure built in the 14th or 15th century.
