Historique

History
Possession of Moissac, Saint-Sauveur was a flourishing priory whose church, rebuilt between 1254 and 1271, constitutes one of the milestones of early Gothic in Languedoc. Transitional building with three naves, slightly projecting transept and flat chevet, it is rib-vaulted and barrel-vaulted transversely. To the south of the church, the priory was built around a cloister and the prior's house. Around 1500, the choir was enlarged by a chamfered chevet, chapels were added and the north facade pierced with a Flamboyant portal. In 1770, reinforcement of the vault. In 1773, work on the piers of the bell tower. The priory disappeared at the end of the 18th century. Used to shelter the Temple of Reason between 1793 and 1795, the church was then returned to worship. Numerous transformations took place during the 19th century: laying of tiles in 1814; renewal of the glazing; creation by Loubens of a baldachin for the high altar; further work on the chapels of the Virgin and Saint-Alpinien... In 1839, painter Pédoya realised a painted decoration on the vaults of the nave. In 1861, architects Théodore Olivier and Jean-Jacques Esquie were commissioned to rebuild the bell tower, a project taken up again from 1868 by Louis Calmettes. In 1876, realisation of a mosaic pavement in the sanctuary by Spinedi. Installation of a programme of figured windows. In 1900, a painted decoration was realised in the eastern parts. The 13th-century sculptures remain around the transept and in the straight bay of the choir.
