Historique
Au carrefour de voies importantes, la ville d'Airvault connaît dès le Moyen Âge des foires importantes. Les halles sont citées dès 1370 et sont alors en bois. En très mauvais état dès le début du 19e siècle, plusieurs projets de reconstruction sont échafaudés (1814, 1838, 1844). Les halles sont finalement reconstruites en pierre, dans le style néo-classique, par l'architecte départemental Pierre-Théophile Segretain, en 1846-1847.
Description
De plan très allongé (environ 40 x 10 m), elles présentent sur chaque façade une succession d'arcades appareillées retombant sur des colonnes doriques (11 arcades sur les longs côtés, 2 arcades sur les petits). La charpente, en chêne, est très bien conçue, avec une alliance d'assemblage classique et de moises boulonnées ; la couverture est en ardoise.

History
At the junction of important roads, the town of Airvault experiences important fairs from the Middle Ages. The market halls are cited from 1370 and are then made of wood. In very poor condition from the beginning of the 19th century, several reconstruction projects are devised (1814, 1838, 1844). The market halls are finally rebuilt in stone, in the neo-classical style, by the departmental architect Pierre-Théophile Segretain, in 1846-1847.
Description
Of very elongated plan (approximately 40 x 10 m), they present on each façade a succession of appareilled arcades falling upon Doric columns (11 arcades on the long sides, 2 arcades on the short sides). The roof structure, in oak, is very well designed, with a combination of classical assembly and bolted tie-beams; the covering is in slate.
