Le castrum est mentionné dès 1040. Hérisson était, à la fin du Moyen-Age, une petite ville disposant d'une halle où se tenait régulièrement un marché, deux auberges et deux églises. Le château est construit sur une butte entourée de fossés, et se dresse à côté de l'église qui a sans doute servi à l'origine de chapelle castrale, remontant elle aussi au 12e siècle avec des croisées d'ogives du 13e. Il présente une enceinte polygonale en partie arasée. La courtine ouest, mieux conservée, est flanquée de trois tours rondes. Ces ouvrages, sans élément de tir, devaient protéger les logis ouverts sur la cour. Un grand logis est adossé à cette courtine. Un corps de bâtiment plus tardif (fin du 16e siècle) le prolonge, doté d'une galerie fermée sur cour, desservie par une tourelle d'escalier en vis. De plan rectangulaire sur trois niveaux, le logis comprend à chaque étage deux pièces en enfilade, éclairées par de hautes fenêtres à coussièges. Postérieur à la muraille, le logis peut dater du 15e siècle, comme la tour d'escalier, alors que le couloir de distribution, qui a pu remplacer une galerie en bois, est plus tardif. Les communs sont construits en appentis près du logis. Le château de Hérisson semble un des tout premier châteaux connus de Gâtine, avec ceux de Germond et de Parthenay.

History
The castrum is mentioned from 1040. Hérisson was, at the end of the Middle Ages, a small town with a hall where a market was regularly held, two inns and two churches. The castle is built on a mound surrounded by ditches, and stands beside the church which probably originally served as a castle chapel, also dating back to the 12th century with rib vaults of the 13th century. It presents a polygonal enclosure partly leveled. The better-preserved west curtain wall is flanked by three round towers. These works, without firing positions, were to protect the dwellings opening onto the courtyard. A large main dwelling is built against this curtain wall. A later building (late 16th century) extends it, equipped with a gallery closed to the courtyard, served by a spiral staircase turret. Of rectangular plan over three levels, the main dwelling comprises at each floor two rooms in succession, lit by tall windows with window seats. Posterior to the wall, the main dwelling may date from the 15th century, as does the staircase tower, while the distribution corridor, which may have replaced a wooden gallery, is later. The outbuildings are built as lean-tos near the main dwelling. The castle of Hérisson seems to be one of the very first known castles of Gâtine, along with those of Germond and Parthenay.
