La coupe de la briqueterie Chédeville à Saint-Pierre-lès-Elbeuf s'est constituée lors de l'extraction de la terre à brique à la fin du XIXe siècle. Le profil est resté dans un état stable au cours des décennies comme en attestent les différentes études qui se sont succédées durant tout le XXe siècle et le début du XXIe. L'intérêt du site et la reprise des investigations en préhistoire ancienne (G. Verron) et géomorphologiques (Bourdier, Lautridou) à la fin des années 1960 et le début des années 1970 ont motivé l'achat par l'Etat des parcelles conservant les coupes de référence de ce site. Cependant aucune protection juridique n'a été engagée à l'époque. Les travaux successifs et notamment les travaux récents ont montré l'intérêt de préserver ce patrimoine géologique et préhistorique unique pour le Grand-Ouest. En attestent les différentes campagnes de datations qui permettent de mieux caler dans le temps les sédiments, et, par conséquent les occupations humaines. Ces méthodes deviennent de plus en plus précises, nécessitant de moins en moins de matériaux à traiter en laboratoire. Cette coupe stratigraphique qui incorpore des vestiges archéologiques (silex taillés et ossements d'animaux préhistorique) conserve des sédiments illustrant 4 cycles interglaciaires / glaciaires.

History
The section of the Chédeville brickworks at Saint-Pierre-lès-Elbeuf was formed during the extraction of brick earth at the end of the 19th century. The profile remained in a stable state over the decades as evidenced by the various studies that followed throughout the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. The interest of the site and the resumption of investigations in early prehistory (G. Verron) and geomorphological (Bourdier, Lautridou) in the late 1960s and early 1970s motivated the purchase by the State of the plots preserving the reference sections of this site. Successive works and notably recent works have shown the interest of preserving this unique geological and prehistoric heritage for the Greater West. This is evidenced by the various dating campaigns which make it possible to better place the sediments in time, and consequently human occupations. These methods are becoming increasingly precise, requiring less and less material to be processed in the laboratory. This stratigraphic section which incorporates archaeological remains (worked flint and bones of prehistoric animals) preserves sediments illustrating 4 interglacial/glacial cycles.
