The church of Saint-Pierre was constructed between 1858 and 1865 on the plans of the architect André Berthier (1811-1873). After hesitation between Gothic and Romanesque styles, the municipality chose neo-Romanesque architecture, reputed to be less expensive than neo-Gothic. The decoration of the chapels, with an ambitious programme of mural paintings, continued into the early 20th century. Two artists shared the bulk of the commissions: Jean-Baptiste Beuchot (1821-1885) and Edouard Krug (1829-1901). Working with local artists, they created a decoration which formed part of the renewal of religious painting in 19th-century France. In 1941, the painter of Vietnamese origin Mai Thu (1906-1980) completed the decoration of a chapel with a fresco in memory of the soldiers of the First World War.

The church presents a Latin cross plan: nave with aisles, adjacent chapels, transept, choir with ambulatory and radiating chapels. Its elevation repeats the characteristics of Romanesque architecture and its decorative vocabulary. The façade is distinguished by its three portals with sculptured tympana and its two octagonal bell towers. The chapels of the chevet and the adjacent chapels of the nave are decorated with mural paintings which cover all the architecture. These decorations bear witness to the inventiveness and variety of religious painting in Mâcon in the second half of the 19th century. Jean-Baptiste Beuchot is particularly distinguished by the skill with which he integrates narrative scenes into the architectural structure.
