L'église de la Nativité de Notre-Dame de Vauvillers a été reconstruite entre 1767 et 1773, à l'emplacement approximatif de l'ancienne église devenue dangereuse, emplacement augmenté de terrains privés. L'édifice s'élève à l'Ouest du village, sur un soubassement qui rachète la déclivité du terrain à l'écart des principaux axes de circulation. Il comprend un clocher-porche dans œuvre, une nef à trois travées, un transept et un chœur d'une travée prolongée d'une abside polygonale. L'ensemble est voûté d'arêtes avec arcs doubleaux. La façade principale, en pierre de taille, est ornée de colonnes toscanes presque détachées portant un fronton courbe brisé, et calée entre des pilastres corniers surmontés d'un massif de maçonnerie coiffé d'une pyramide couronnée d'une boule. Si le plan de l'église de Vauvillers est d'un parti fréquent parmi les nombreuses églises du 18e siècle de la Haute-Saône, ses dimensions, et la qualité de sa façade principale en font une des œuvres les mieux réussies de l'architecte Chognard.

History
The Church of the Nativity of Notre-Dame de Vauvillers was rebuilt between 1767 and 1773, on the approximate site of the former church which had become dangerous, a site enlarged with private lands. While a project by J.-C. Colombot is known, it was in fact that of Claude Étienne Chognard which was executed. The architectural works were completed by furnishings created on the plans of the sculptor Gerdolle de la Marche, then, in 1782, by the Dole architect Amoudru (confessionals). The building rises to the West of the village, on a plinth which compensates for the slope of the terrain away from the main traffic routes. It comprises a porch tower within the walls, a nave with three bays, a transept and a choir of one bay extended by a polygonal apse. The whole is vaulted with ribs and transverse arches. The main façade, in ashlar stone, is adorned with Tuscan columns almost detached carrying a broken curved pediment, and wedged between corner pilasters surmounted by a mass of masonry topped with a pyramid crowned with a ball. If the plan of the church of Vauvillers is of a type common among the many 18th-century churches of Haute-Saône, its dimensions, and the quality of its main façade make it one of the most successful works of the architect Chognard.
