Although built in 1910, to remedy the lack of Catholic parishes in an increasingly extended and dense neighbourhood, the church of Saint-Arbogast and its parish centre are of light structure to be razed if necessary: if the city were for example again declared in state of siege, as in 1870. Thus, built on the glacis of the second fortification of Strasbourg, the church of Saint-Arbogast defines itself as precarious architecture, because of its very situation on open ground. From the Route des Romains, the church built by the German architect, Joseph Beck (1877- ?), does not reveal itself immediately: it truly belongs to the urban fabric of the neighbourhood. Its bell tower is not very high and its dimensions, just like its architectural elements (dormers, exterior porch, roof with a mansard slope and an adjoining lean-to), give it a sort of "village church" air, in keeping with the spatial organization of the neighbourhood. All the more so as it is built in timber framing. In the form of a Latin cross, it is not oriented. It possesses an exterior porch of Rhenish regionalist style, flanked by a bell tower to the east. It has a nave and two aisles, side chapels and a weekday chapel. Its roof structure, in boat keel form for its central nave, is surprising. It rests on a 30 cm concrete foundation visible in its cellar. Its stained glass windows, of geometric form, recall art deco. The openings of the nave are of rectangular form and those of the aisles, round arch. As for the choir, it receives bays with a sort of more complex lattice work. The liturgical furniture is not extensive but interesting: notably the ensemble of seats, the altar and the tabernacle of neo-Carolingian style. An important gallery with three cantilevered balconies overhangs the nave. A Roethinger organ dating 1916 is installed there. A few metres from the church, on the neighbouring parcel, the Saint-Arbogast parish centre stands, somewhat massive. It is of quite similar workmanship to the church with its timber framing and its rectangular plan, also in Latin cross form. It serves as a parish centre as much as a cultural and sports hall.
