The castle stands on a rock situated to the south of the castle Saint-Pierre and thus controls angles of view impossible to master from the main castle. The first mention of the site dates back to 1109-1117. From an architectural standpoint, it constitutes an example, rare for its homogeneity, of a secondary fortification completing the surveillance apparatus of the old frontier, constituted by the great royal fortresses of the Corbières. At the foot of the rock supporting Sabarda, to the north, are the remains of the old church of Saint-André. This building is cited in 1011, in the bull of Pope Sergius IV, among the churches forming the patrimony of the monastery of Saint-Pierre de Fenouillet.
