La demeure a été construite en 1713 par Alexandre Saint-Martin, maire de la ville, issu de l'une des grandes familles d'armateurs et marchands dirigeant la cité. La maison Saint-Martin, extérieurement intacte, illustre la solennité austère du 17e siècle. L'intérieur, organisé autour d'une vaste cage d'escalier, a conservé une grande partie de son décor d'origine (rampe de fer forgé, balustres, lambris, huisseries).

History
The dwelling was built in 1713 by Alexandre Saint-Martin, mayor of the city, from one of the great families of shipowners and merchants directing the city. The Saint-Martin house, externally intact, illustrates the austere solemnity of the 17th century. The interior, organised around a vast stairwell, has preserved much of its original décor (wrought iron railing, balusters, wainscoting, door frames).
