Historique
Description

History
The gymnasium was built in 1884 by the municipality for the college which took place in the buildings of the former abbey and became in 1975 the Pomel cultural centre. It was part of the policy of incentive for sports education and the construction of gymnasiums developed by the State from the Second Empire and especially under the Third Republic. In this period marked by the desire for revenge after the defeat of Sedan, sports training is conceived as a prerequisite for military education, both as physical preparation and as education in discipline. Even if a standard plan is not imposed, prescriptions are laid down: minimum size, ventilation and lighting by high openings, allowing better ventilation and leaving room for the storage of apparatus in the lower part... These obligations ultimately led to buildings with fairly similar arrangements. The gymnasium of Issoire preserved until a recent period its sports use, which it would lose when it was integrated into the new project of the Pomel building.
Description
The building is constructed in the eastern return of the wing of the abbey of Saint-Austremoine which became a college. Of modest dimensions, it presents a rectangular plan and is covered with a mansard roof. Its gabled façade on the street comprises the entrance door at the first level and at the 2nd level, paired openings on either side of the central through opening in the triangular gable. This is crowned with an acroterion bearing the date of 1884. The lateral façades are also lit by paired high openings with depressed surround. The interior presents a single volume, covered with a false ceiling of frisette. Changing rooms are arranged at the rear of this space.
