Historique
Eglise construite entre 1866 et 1868 à l'emplacement de l'ancien édifice, par Aymon-Gilbert Mallay, architecte diocésain. Reprenant l'essentiel de la structure et du plan des églises majeures auvergnates (nef accostée de collatéraux, avec tribune à l'aplomb du narthex, choeur à rond-point aux arcs surhaussés et déambulatoire desservant des chapelles rayonnantes), il s'en éloigne en supprimant transepts et tribunes collatérales. Il adopte des solutions éclectiques intermédiaires en plaçant deux absidioles latérales sur le chevet, sans absidiole d'axe, ou en utilisant des colonnes portant des arcs au cintre régulier qui rappellent plutôt les supports des églises basilicales classiques. A l'intérieur, un décor peint différencié et hiérarchisé recouvre murs, colonnes, chapiteaux, doubleaux et voûtes. Cette polychromie, où se mêlent faux appareils, semis légers sur badigeons, motifs géométriques stylisés et représentations végétales, permet une lecture claire des volumes. Ce décor est complété par un mobilier conçu pour l'église, en partie récupéré de l'ancienne église et provenant en partie de l'ancienne chartreuse de Port-Sainte-Marie. L'ensemble de vitraux date de 1890 et est dû aux maîtres verriers Mailhot, Gaudin et Thibaud

History
Church built between 1866 and 1868 on the site of the former building, by Aymon-Gilbert Mallay, diocesan architect. Taking the essential features of the structure and plan of major Auvergnat churches (nave flanked by aisles, with gallery above the narthex, choir with ambulatory and radiating chapels), it differs from these in eliminating transepts and side galleries. It adopts eclectic intermediate solutions by placing two lateral absidioles on the chevet, without axial absidiole, or by using columns bearing arches with regular curve which recall rather the supports of classical basilical churches. Inside, differentiated and hierarchical painted decoration covers walls, columns, capitals, transverse arches and vaults. This polychromy, which mingles false stonework, light scattered patterns over washes, stylized geometric motifs and vegetation representations, allows a clear reading of the volumes. This decoration is completed by furnishings designed for the church, partly recovered from the old church and partly from the former charterhouse of Port-Sainte-Marie. The entire ensemble of stained glass dates from 1890 and is due to the master glaziers Mailhot, Gaudin and Thibaud.
