History
The building was commissioned by lord Mortimer Davis. Built around 1880 in white stone, the compact-plan building approaches in its dimensions and style the bourgeois villas erected under the Second Empire in the Parisian suburbs, and borrows the architectural vocabulary of the 18th century (regular elongated openings, lintels decorated with leaf clasps, broken roofs, corner chains with table rustication). The garden, connected to the park by an underground passage treated in rocaille style, is enclosed by an ironwork gate enhanced with gilding. Inside, carved woodwork, parquetry floors, bronze chiselled hardware fittings, ceilings painted in trompe-l'oeil, stucco cornices. The decorations are inspired by the Renaissance or the 18th century.
