Fernand-Joseph-Edouard Marche naquît le 2 juin 1888 aux Corons d'Aix, à Bully-les-Mines. Il est agé de 13 ans lorsqu'il descend pour la première fois dans la fosse n°1, le 23 juillet 1901. En août 1914, il est mobilisé et part rejoindre le 130ème Régiment d'Infanterie. A la suite d'un acte héroïque au cours duquel il perdit la vie, le 1er août 1916, il fut cité à l'ordre de l'Armée par le Ministre de la Guerre, le 26 avril 1922. La Compagnie des Mines de Béthune décida de rendre hommage au soldat en élevant un monument à sa mémoire à l'entrée de la fosse n°1 sur une petite place semi-circulaire. Le sculpteur Armand Roblot fut chargé d'exécuter l'uvre qui trouva sa place dans la nouvelle organisation du carreau de la fosse n°1 et de sa nouvelle entrée. Cette entrée et la grille attenante entourant le monument, allient la tradition classique (petites colonnes doriques) et le style art-déco, dans la forme générale des piliers (corniche sans moulure, graphisme des lettres « CB » pour la Compagnie de Béthune). Le socle fut réalisé par le marbrier Kinard et installé avant la fin de 1924. La pose du soldat et des bas-reliefs fut également exécutée par Kinard entre août et septembre 1925. Le monument au soldat Marche fut inauguré le 4 octobre 1925. Il fut déplacé à la fin des années 1970 à l'entrée du square Henri Darras, où il est situé actuellement.

History
Fernand-Joseph-Edouard Marche was born on 2 June 1888 at the Corons d'Aix, at Bully-les-Mines. He was 13 years old when he descended for the first time into pit no. 1, on 23 July 1901. In August 1914, he was mobilized and set out to join the 130th Infantry Regiment. Following a heroic act during which he lost his life, on 1 August 1916, he was cited in the order of the Army by the Minister of War, on 26 April 1922. The Béthune Mines Company decided to pay homage to the soldier by erecting a monument to his memory at the entrance of pit no. 1 on a small semi-circular square. The sculptor Armand Roblot was entrusted with executing the work which found its place in the new organization of the pit head of pit no. 1 and its new entrance. This entrance and the adjoining railings surrounding the monument, combine classical tradition (small Doric columns) and art-deco style, in the general form of the pillars (cornice without moulding, graphic design of the letters "CB" for the Béthune Company).
