Historique

History
During the First World War, the old town centre of Béthune is completely destroyed and private heritage is largely affected by bombing. Reconstruction is largely undertaken by the State. In Béthune, the reconstruction of housing takes two aspects: on the one hand, the Compagnie des Mines de Noeux and the Compagnie du Nord undertake the construction of large workers' settlements on the outskirts of the town; on the other hand, reconstruction for private individuals is managed by nine cooperatives. The municipal council establishes an Aesthetic Commission charged with examining the plans proposed by architects for the reconstruction of houses on the Grand'Place. This building was erected according to the plans of Jacques Alleman, faithful to regionalist architecture, with realizations strongly imbued with Flemish tradition and classicism, in respect of the space of the square and the old plot. Each house presents a very slender gable on the street and houses a shop on the ground floor and dwellings on the upper floors.
