The church of Saint-Martin of Blacourt, situated between Beauvais (Oise) and Gournay-en-Bray (Seine-Maritime), is entirely representative of the churches of the Pays de Bray picard region. The great simplicity of the construction, of the plan and of the elevations makes it no less imposing at the heart of this small village. Its single nave of sandstone rubble founded in the 12th century, its projecting transept and its choir with three cut angles rebuilt in the 16th century and its voluminous bell tower of timber framing and slate which crowns the transept crossing, are characteristic of the rural churches of the territory. Many churches from the late Middle Ages in the Pays de Bray, and more generally in the north-west quarter of France, are equipped not with stone vaults but with panelled roof structures in the shape of an inverted keel. Saint-Martin of Blacourt is distinguished by its roof structure which covers both the choir and the transept, and forms an imposing eight-part vault at the transept crossing. This is dated by an inscription, a rare occurrence, to 1515, which establishes an interesting and early milestone in the corpus. The structural elements of this roof structure are highlighted by well-preserved polychromy. The quality of the carved decorations is to be emphasised, both by the variety of their iconography - at once ornamental and figurative (angel, symbols of the evangelists, dragons with vine trails, profile busts) - and by the harmonious association of the vocabulary of the flamboyant Gothic tradition and Renaissance innovations. The whole of the 16th and 19th-century stained glass windows complete the decoration harmoniously.
