In 1829, the research society created by the Dumas Company discovered coal in 1829. At the beginning of 1832, the company recruited the engineer Charles Mathieu in order to carry out the first sinkings at Lourches. He had the Saint-Mathieu shaft dug. Coal was found there at 78m depth in 1832 and exploitation began in 1833. The residence of the company director was built in 1845. Thanks to mining activity, the population went from 155 inhabitants in 1804 to 5834 in 1946. The company decided to erect a monument to its director in 1900. A competition was opened, and the project of Corneille-Henri Theunissen was selected, who asked the architect Constant Moyaux to participate with him in the competition. The monument was presented to the commune in 1901. The projected garden was realized shortly after, surrounded by a metal fence.
