Historique
Description

History
A Savings Bank was established in Nevers in 1833. A first Savings Bank building was constructed in 1884. Having become too small in the 1910s, Frédéric Blandin, president of the board of directors, commissioned in 1912 the construction of a new building from the architect from Nivernais Auguste Palet (1861-1933). Blandin conceived an ambitious iconographic programme for the decoration of the façades, entrusted to sculptor from Nivernais Alix Marquet (1875-1939). Work begun in 1914 is interrupted by the war. The new Savings Bank is inaugurated in 1921, although the building is not completed. The neo-Gothic style, original for a banking establishment, is asserted as a reference to the ducal palace of Nevers. The sculptured decoration develops an articulate iconography, symbolising the values of savings, notably in its large façade relief: Labour, its direction, savings, the future. Remodelled in the 1980s, the building is enlarged by the addition of a courtyard construction which, externally, respects the style of the building. Inside, the arrangements are greatly disturbed, elements are demolished. Only the council chamber on the first floor has retained its structure and decoration.
Description
The building is constructed at the corner of place Carnot and rue Saint-Martin, a staircase turret marks this corner. Its soaring roofs recall the silhouette close to the ducal palace. Of neo-Gothic style, the façades are characterised by numerous openings, façade gables and dormers of varied styles. The decoration is rich, notably in the upper parts (pinnacles, fleurons, etc.). The sculptures by Alix Marquet illustrate, on the façade, the virtues of savings and the vices of prodigality, through several figures (Avarice, Prodigality, the Picaillons) and chimerical animal figures.
