Construit sur le site de la gare de Gatteville-le-Phare par les Allemands à compter de la fin de l'année 1942, ce quai de chargement était destiné au transport du sable extrait du cordon dunaire de l'étang de Gattemare jusqu'à Cherbourg . Ce sable était tout d'abord transporté par camions jusqu'à ce mur et déchargé dans les wagons d'un train qui reliait avant-guerre tous les villages de la côte, de Cherbourg à Montebourg, et que l'on appelait alors communément le "Tue-vaques". A l'exception d'une infime partie située à son extrémité, ce mur a été conservé dans son intégralité. Cet ouvrage offre un éclairage de tout premier plan sur le processus de construction de l'Organisation Todt dans le cadre de la réalisation du Mur de l'Atlantique, en l'occurrence l'acheminement des énormes quantités de sable de mer nécessaires à la mise en chantier des défenses côtières de la région.

History
Built on the site of Gatteville-le-Phare railway station by the Germans from the end of 1942, this loading quay was intended for the transport of sand extracted from the dune cord of the Gattemare pond to Cherbourg. This sand was initially transported by trucks to this wall and unloaded into the wagons of a train that before the war connected all the villages of the coast, from Cherbourg to Montebourg, and which was then commonly called the "Tue-vaques". With the exception of an infinitesimal part located at its end, this wall has been preserved in its entirety. This structure provides prime insight into the process of Organization Todt construction in the context of the realization of the Atlantic Wall, namely the delivery of the enormous quantities of sea sand necessary for the launching of coastal defences in the region.
