C'est le représentant de la puissante famille des Châtillon que la commune a voulu honorer, et non pas le chef militaire de la cause protestante. Le buste de l'amiral est vêtu d'un habit civil historicisant et non pas d'une armure, dans laquelle on l'a souvent présenté. Le buste en plâtre a été sculpté par Jeanne de Beaumont, qui signait Beaumont-Castries, et repéré au salon de 1878. Le ministère des Beaux-Arts l'a acquis pour la commune de Châtillon et a passé directement commande d'une copie en bronze auprès de la fonderie "Thiébaut Frères".
