Historique
L'abbaye bénédictine de Saint-Pierre-des-Chazes fut fondée vers 910 par l'épouse de Claude de Chanteuges, puissante famille qui la dota de biens et revenus importants. Elle était destinée à l'accueil de filles de familles nobles, servies par des filles roturières. Les abbesses revendiquèrent toujours l'indépendance de l'abbaye avant de reconnaître son affiliation, au XVIIe siècle, à la Chaise-Dieu puis à Cluny. A la Révolution, l'abbaye fut vendue comme bien national. A la fin du XVIIIe ou au début du XIXe siècle, une maison d'habitation fut élevée à l'emplacement de l'église abbatiale. Hormis la chapelle XVe et les restes du cloître, encore en élévation, les autres vestiges sont remployés dans la maçonnerie de la maison d'habitation ou conservés en sous-sol.

History
The Benedictine abbey of Saint-Pierre-des-Chazes was founded around 910 by the wife of Claude de Chanteuges, a powerful family which endowed it with important goods and revenues. It was intended for the reception of daughters of noble families, served by daughters of commoner birth. The abbesses always claimed the independence of the abbey before recognising its affiliation, in the 17th century, to La Chaise-Dieu and then to Cluny. At the Revolution, the abbey was sold as national property. At the end of the 18th or the beginning of the 19th century, a dwelling house was erected at the location of the abbatial church. Apart from the 15th century chapel and the remains of the cloister, still in elevation, the other remains are reused in the masonry of the dwelling house or preserved in the basement.
