History
Medieval priory which was dependent on the abbey of Saint-Pierre-des-Chazes. The building which flanked the left side of the church would have been the dwelling of the prioress and her companion. Another hypothesis proposes seeing in it the cemetery of the abbey, based on the bones found around, the subject of the wall paintings and the funeral scrolls. In 1645, a fire destroyed the archives of the monastery which the Revolution finished ruining. The chapel of Sainte-Marie-des-Chazes was restored to worship in the 19th century. The chapel presents a porch tower, a single nave of three bays, an apse in slight recession, circular on the interior, pentagonal on the exterior. To the north, the wall was decorated with wall paintings dating from the 13th century (transferred to the Puy museum): the Passion, the Last Judgement. The nave is separated from the choir, vaulted with a cul-de-four, by a double arch resting on engaged columns, surmounted by capitals with scrollwork and foliage. The Romanesque tower is square and terminated by a spire bearing antéfixes at its summit and at each of its angles. Each wall of the tower contains two twin Romanesque windows with alternating voussoirs, furnished with archivolts.
