Ce pont, conçu sur les bases dun projet de lingénieur Jollois à la demande du préfet en 1863, figure parmi les quatre ouvrages de ce type subsistant en Haute-Loire. Les premiers ponts suspendus ont été réalisés à partir de 1818, en Angleterre. Celui de Saint-Ilpize fait partie de cette troisième génération utilisant la technique des haubans obliques mis au point par Jollois après 1850. Ce dernier sassocia à F. Arnodin, constructeur métallique, pour bâtir le pont, en 1879. A cette occasion, Arnodin améliora la technique en inventant le câble en suspension toronné. A la suite, il construisit de nombreux autres ponts dans le monde entier.

History
This bridge, designed on the basis of a project by engineer Jollois at the request of the prefect in 1863, is among the four works of this type remaining in Haute-Loire. The first suspension bridges were built from 1818 onwards, in England. That of Saint-Ilpize is part of this third generation using the technique of oblique stays developed by Jollois after 1850. The latter associated himself with F. Arnodin, metal constructor, to build the bridge, in 1879. On this occasion, Arnodin improved the technique by inventing the stranded suspension cable.
