Cet ouvrage fut conçu selon un projet élaboré par lingénieur Heurtault et comprenant deux lots : la maçonnerie et le tablier. Le pont fut ouvert à la circulation en mars 1883. La technique des ponts suspendus a constitué, en son temps, une innovation, permettant un large franchissement peu sensible aux variations du lit. Toutefois, ce mode constructif fut abandonné dans le second quart du 20e siècle au profit des innovations du béton et au regard, également, de la fragilité de ces ouvrages. Les ponts suspendus illustrent une période de lhistoire très expérimentale et déterminante pour le devenir de lingénierie constructive mais peu représentée en raison de la disparition des ouvrages.

History
This structure was designed according to a project elaborated by engineer Heurtault and comprising two contracts: the masonry and the deck. The bridge was opened to traffic in March 1883. The technique of suspension bridges constituted, in its time, an innovation, allowing a wide crossing little affected by variations in the riverbed. However, this constructive method was abandoned in the second quarter of the 20th century in favour of concrete innovations and also in view of the fragility of these structures. Suspension bridges illustrate a period of very experimental and determining history for the future of constructive engineering but poorly represented due to the disappearance of the structures.
