Historique

History
Main dwelling of the 15th-16th centuries, doubled in the 18th century, Salcrupt appears as a rustic building that has remained authentic, characteristic of granite constructions of the eastern part of the Velay. The castle presents a rectangular plan consisting of two bodies of buildings joined together, served and defended by a staircase tower half projecting situated at the centre of the main facade. The position of the staircase turret allows us to suppose that the main dwelling was to extend to the east from the 16th century. An enclosure wall delimits on the south side an interior courtyard. Outbuildings serve, on the East side, to close this courtyard. An external boundary wall forms a sort of second enclosure along the communal paths, encompassing the exploitation land to the east and north of the castle. A vast farm building completes this wall on the west side. The interior arrangements correspond to the two construction campaigns. The central division divides, on the ground floor and first floor, two large rooms, while on the second floor these spaces are themselves divided into several small rooms. The two rooms on the ground floor apparently had the function of kitchens and both possess a vast chimney with jambs and covering consisting of large ashlar stones. Woodwork covered the walls of the western kitchen. On the second floor, a bedroom is lined with 18th century woodwork.
