L'ancienne église de Châtenois se dressait en un lieu très anciennement occupé ; sur une colline à l'extrémité Nord du village. Elle était devenue trop petite et menaçait ruine. On décida de n'en garder que le choeur, comme chapelle du cimetière, et d'en construire une nouvelle au centre du village entre deux quartiers, sur le site d'une motte médiévale. L'architecte dolois Besand fournit le projet en 1832 ; la construction s'acheva en 1836. Meublée peu après, l'église nous est parvenue dans son état d'origine. La façade intègre le clocher-porche dans une composition rigoureuse. Le vaisseau central de la nef, voûté en berceau, communique avec les collatéraux par une arcade sur colonnes doriques. L'abside, voûtée en cul-de-four, conserve son éclairage zénithal. De construction soignée, cette petite église est d'un néo-classicisme très pur. Comme celle plus développée de Saint-Aubin (inv. MH) , elle a servi de référence à Besand, architecte important pour l'architecture néoclassique.

History
The former church of Châtenois stood in a very ancient location; on a hill at the North end of the village. It had become too small and threatened with ruin. It was decided to keep only the choir as a cemetery chapel, and to build a new one in the centre of the village between two quarters, on the site of a medieval motte. The Douls architect Besand provided the project in 1832; construction was completed in 1836. Furnished shortly after, the church has come down to us in its original state. The façade integrates the porch tower in a rigorous composition. The central nave, vaulted in barrel vault, communicates with the side aisles by an arcade on Doric columns. The apse, vaulted in apse vault, retains its overhead lighting. Of careful construction, this small church is of very pure Neoclassicism. Like the more developed one of Saint-Aubin (inv. MH), it served as a reference for Besand, an important architect for Neoclassical architecture.
