L'ancienne église paroissiale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Baume-les-Messieurs se situe à La Peyrouse, un écart du village avec l'abbaye, à l'entrée du site exceptionnel de la reculée de Baume-les-Messieurs des plus caractéristiques du Jura. Deux chapelles latérales furent ensuite adossées symétriquement à la travée du choeur, formant un faux-transept. Le clocher du porche fut surélevé d'un étage en 1770. La voûte de la chapelle latérale sud a été reconstruite en 1895. Malgré ces diverses campagnes de construction, cette église présente une certaine unité d'aspect extérieurement et intérieurement. Elle est précédée d'un clocher-porche ; le toit à deux versants couvre les chapelles latérales. Les laves conservées sur la toiture s'accordent aux falaises du site. On remarque la porte du porche moulurée et la porte latérale à pilastres ioniques. A l'intérieur, on a un seul vaisseau couvert de voûtes d'arêtes reçues par des pilastres toscans. Le choeur conserve un rétable et des lambris qui intègrent des toiles peintes, la nef conserve de nombreuses pierres tombales. Cette petite église bénéficie d'une situation exceptionnelle.

History
The former parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste of Baume-les-Messieurs is located at La Peyrouse, a hamlet of the village with the abbey, at the entrance to the exceptional site of the reculée of Baume-les-Messieurs, one of the most characteristic in the Jura.
