Une abbaye bénédictine fut fondée, à Déols, en 917. A cette période, cinq églises sont déjà implantées sur le territoire dont l'église Saint-Germain qui fut incluse dans la clôture de l'abbaye. Au 17ème siècle, Saint-Germain devient la paroisse générale de la ville. Désaffectée en 1778, l'édifice est divisé entre plusieurs propriétaires après 1821. La majeure partie de l'église a été acquise par la municipalité entre 1981 et 2004. Sur un plan architectural, elle adopte un plan basilical très allongé avec une chapelle seigneuriale s'ouvrant sur la dernière travée de la nef. Deux campagnes principales de travaux sont identifiables : la première, intervenue à l'époque romane (baies en plein cintre) et la seconde, à la fin de l'époque gothique (restauration de la nef et du choeur et construction de la chapelle latérale nord). A l'intérieur, l'église conserve des traces de décors peints : faux appareils et frises composées de motifs végétaux. Les multiples transformations, divisions et adjonctions rendent difficiles la compréhension de l'église Saint-Germain.

History
A Benedictine abbey was founded at Déols in 917. At this period, five churches are already established in the territory, including the church of Saint-Germain which was included within the enclosure of the abbey. In the 17th century, Saint-Germain became the general parish of the town. Desecrated in 1778, the building was divided among several owners after 1821. The greater part of the church was acquired by the municipality between 1981 and 2004. On an architectural plan, it adopts a very elongated basilical plan with a seigneurial chapel opening onto the last bay of the nave. Two main campaigns of work are identifiable: the first, undertaken in the Romanesque period (round-arch openings) and the second, at the end of the Gothic period (restoration of the nave and choir and construction of the north side chapel). Inside, the church retains traces of painted decoration: false ashlar and friezes composed of vegetal motifs. The multiple transformations, divisions and additions make understanding the church of Saint-Germain difficult.
