Historique
Situées sur les hauteurs, à lest de la ville, les arènes ont été construites dès 1897 pour sachever en 1901 sur les plans des architectes Carlier, père et fils. Mêlant briques, pierres de taille et ciment armé, elles constituent une solution de transition avec le tout béton armé de larchitecture moderne. Elles témoignent également de la période brillante qua connu la ville de béziers qui sest traduite par des réalisations architecturales prestigieuses et semblent tenir un rôle prépondérant dans lhistoire de la construction des édifices destinés à abriter les activités tauromachiques, introduites dans le sud de la France au 19e siècle. La double utilisation de ces arènes retiennent également lattention puisquelles accueillirent de grandes manifestations lyriques, en particulier la création de « Déjanire », en 1898, sous la baguette de son créateur Camille Saint-Saëns.

History
Located on the heights, to the east of the city, the arenas were built from 1897 to 1901 according to the plans of architects Carlier, father and son. Combining bricks, cut stone and reinforced cement, they constitute a transitional solution with the reinforced concrete of modern architecture. They also bear witness to the brilliant period experienced by the city of Béziers, which was expressed through prestigious architectural achievements and seem to hold a preponderant role in the history of the construction of buildings intended to house bullfighting activities, introduced in the south of France in the 19th century. The dual use of these arenas also deserves attention since they hosted major lyric performances, in particular the premiere of "Déjanire" in 1898, under the baton of its creator Camille Saint-Saëns.
