History
Exceptional witness to metal architecture in covered markets in the 19th century, notably as an early example inspired by the model of Parisian architect Victor Baltard and remaining in situ. The municipal architect Jean Cassan uses modern materials (iron and cast iron, zinc for the roofing), but retains ashlar stone for the corner piers. The first stone is laid in April 1858; the inauguration takes place in February 1859. In 1969, the building receives a cladding of light alloy sheet with glazing with ventilation fins which masks the original construction.
