La création de l'espace sportif Lescure, rebaptisé par la suite Chaban-Delmas, est initiée en 1933 par le Maire Adrien Marquet, le site étant précédemment occupé par un premier site sportif réalisé en 1919 par Alfred-Duprat. Le chantier est confié à Raoul Jourde, finalement remplacé par Jacques d'Welles. Il porte la marque des deux hommes, ainsi que celle d'Egidio Dabbeni, ingénieur ayant notamment permis la réalisation de la grande casquette de béton faisant le tour du stade.
