The Cité Frugès in Pessac is the oldest of three sites representing standardised housing. In 1924, industrialist Henri Frugès entrusts Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret with the realisation of two workers' cities. One first at Lège, on the Arcachon basin, and the second at Pessac, in the suburbs of Bordeaux. Economic constraints oblige Le Corbusier to design groupings outside of a few cases, without however obliging him to renounce his plastic requirements. To the four types of houses combined: quincunx, arcade, skyscraper and zigzag are added specific isolated houses. The building site begins in 1925 and ends in 1926. The Pessac experience represents an ambitious attempt, both from the technical and financial point of view and from the methodological and aesthetic point of view.
