Projeté dès 1881, conçu par le sculpteur Achille Dumilâtre, réalisé entre 1893 et 1902 sous la direction de l'architecte Victor Rich, le Monument aux Girondins se trouve au centre de l'extrémité occidentale, en hémicycle, de la place des Quinconces. Sa hauteur est de cinquante mètres. Il consiste en une énorme colonne de pierre à chapiteau corinthien sur lequel se trouve une statue en bronze du génie de la Liberté brisant ses fers. Sur le socle, vers l'esplanade, le Coq gaulois est encadré par l'Histoire et l'Eloquence, tandis qu'à l'opposé vers l'hémicycle, Bordeaux domine la Garonne et la Dordogne. Dans les bassins servant de déversoir aux fontaines sont représentés le triomphe de la République, du côté du Grand Théâtre, et le triomphe de la Concorde, du côté du Jardin Public, deux groupes monumentaux en bronze. Il fallut pour mener à bien le chantier de la statuaire que Dumilâtre fasse appel à la collaboration des sculpteurs Félix Charpentier et Gustave Debrie, ainsi qu'à celle de plusieurs fonderies : Denonvilliers à Sermaize dans la Marne, Leblanc-Barbedienne et également Durennes à Paris, enfin les Fonderies du Val d'Osne en Haute-Marne.

History
Envisaged from 1881, conceived by the sculptor Achille Dumilâtre, realised between 1893 and 1902 under the direction of the architect Victor Rich, the Monument to the Girondins is located at the centre of the western extremity, in a hemicycle, of the place des Quinconces. Its height is fifty metres. It consists of an enormous stone column with a Corinthian capital on which stands a bronze statue of the genius of Liberty breaking its chains. On the base, towards the esplanade, the Gallic Rooster is framed by History and Eloquence, while on the opposite side towards the hemicycle, Bordeaux dominates the Garonne and the Dordogne. In the basins serving as outlets for the fountains are represented the triumph of the Republic, on the side of the Grand Théâtre, and the triumph of Concord, on the side of the Public Garden, two monumental groups in bronze. To carry out the sculptural work successfully Dumilâtre had to call upon the collaboration of the sculptors Félix Charpentier and Gustave Debrie, as well as that of several foundries: Denonvilliers at Sermaize in the Marne, Leblanc-Barbedienne and also Durennes in Paris, finally the Fonderies du Val d'Osne in Haute-Marne.
