Historique

History
During the 1920s, the territory was provided with a network of aerial beacons, 'the night flight', along major routes among which were the Latécoère Lines which conveyed mail from Toulouse-Montaudran towards Africa and South America. The beacon at Baziège was located on the Toulouse-Narbonne route and served as a guide to prestigious names such as Mermoz, Saint-Exupéry or Guillaumet. Erected around 1925 (or 1932, either after the bankruptcy of Aéropostale in 1931), it is a concrete construction which constituted the starting point of the Latécoère lines. It represents one of the three beacons still preserved in Midi-Pyrénées where the few dozen installed in this region have either disappeared or prove to be severely degraded. Its historical importance is considered undeniable as it represents an essential milestone in the knowledge of aeronautics and the earliest flight techniques which found indisputable experimental ground in the heart of the Toulouse region. This beacon also symbolizes all the 'night flights' carried out by aviation pioneers. It also embodies a very particular flight technique, from light beacon to light beacon, which disappeared with the Second World War.
