Cet édifice se distingue par son ancienneté ainsi que sa qualité architecturale. Ancien phare d'entrée du port d'Aigues-Mortes, il fut construit en 1828-1829 et est considéré comme un témoignage du premier programme d'éclairage des côtes françaises lancé par Fresnel en 1825. Le vieux phare était celui du port d'Aigues-Mortes, la commune du Grau-du-Roi n'ayant été détachée d'Aigues-Mortes qu'en 1879. Un phénomène d'alluvionnement important obligea à des dragages continuels du chenal et à l'allongement des jetées où deux feux furent allumés en 1872. Le phare, trop éloigné et trop bas, fut remplacé en 1869 par celui de l'Espiguette. Les plans ont été dessinés par l'ingénieur ordinaire Pierre Courant. Sur le modèle des phares de l'époque Fresnel-Reynaud, c'est une tour cylindrique s'élevant au centre d'un soubassement massif. Les façades du rez-de-chaussée à pignon triangulaire sont d'une ordonnance très classique. La façade ouest est englobée dans des constructions postérieures. La tour contient un escalier en vis donnant accès à la chambre de veille. La lanterne, coiffée d'un toit en forme de dôme recouvert de cuivre, s'élève de 3,60m au-dessus de la tour. Depuis la lanterne s'effectue l'accès à la plateforme circulaire extérieure, entourée d'un garde-corps métallique.

This building is distinguished by its age as well as its architectural quality. Former lighthouse at the entrance to the port of Aigues-Mortes, it was constructed in 1828-1829 and is considered a testament to the first programme for lighting French coasts launched by Fresnel in 1825. The old lighthouse was that of the port of Aigues-Mortes, the commune of Grau-du-Roi having only been detached from Aigues-Mortes in 1879. A significant alluvial phenomenon forced continuous dredging of the channel and the lengthening of the jetties where two lights were lit in 1872. The lighthouse, too far away and too low, was replaced in 1869 by that of l'Espiguette. The plans were drawn by ordinary engineer Pierre Courant. On the model of the lighthouses of the Fresnel-Reynaud era, it is a cylindrical tower rising at the centre of a massive base. The façades of the ground floor with triangular gable are of a very classical arrangement. The west façade is englobed in later constructions.
