Edifié à la fin du 18ème siècle, au carrefour des principales voies de communication régionales, l'ancien hôtel du Louvre est un des rares exemples d'architectures hôtelières de la période classique encore en place aujourd'hui. Sa distribution intérieure est typique de l'architecture hôtelière : entrée située côté est donnant accès à un vestibule communiquant avec un grand escalier d'époque Louis XVI qui desservait les étages de chambres. Autour de la cage d'escalier sont répartis les espaces de sociabilité : petit salon, cuisine, grand salon. Côté ouest, l'accès était destiné aux voitures. A l'arrière de l'hôtel, se trouvent une cour ainsi que les remises des écuries. A l'étage, les dispositions originelles ont été en grande partie conservées. L'élévation principale est scandée par des pilastres à refends définissant huit travées. Le traitement architectural et ornemental des deux travées d'entrée témoigne d'une volonté d'apparat. Les deux grands balcons en ferronnerie, d'une grande finesse, parachèvent la mise en valeur de ces deux entrées. Cet hôtel est considéré comme un des plus beaux exemples du style Louis XVI à Nîmes.

History
Erected at the end of the 18th century, at the junction of the main regional communication routes, the former Hôtel du Louvre is one of the rare examples of hotel architecture of the classical period still in place today. Its interior distribution is typical of hotel architecture: entrance situated on the east side giving access to a vestibule communicating with a grand staircase of the Louis XVI period which served the bedroom floors. Around the staircase well are distributed the spaces of sociability: small drawing room, kitchen, large drawing room. On the west side, access was intended for carriages. At the rear of the hotel, there are a courtyard as well as the coach houses of the stables. On the upper floor, the original arrangements have been largely preserved. The main elevation is articulated by pilasters with refends defining eight bays. The architectural and ornamental treatment of the two entrance bays testifies to a desire for display. The two large iron balconies, of great fineness, complete the enhancement of these two entrances. This hotel is considered one of the finest examples of Louis XVI style in Nîmes.
