Lîle de Penfret fait partie de larchipel des Glénan, lieu stratégique pour ses puits deau douce et ses mouillages protégés. La commission des Phares et le service des Ponts et Chaussés choisissent cet emplacement pour implanter le premier feu des Glénan. Par ailleurs, dès 1825, la commission de Défense des côtes souhaitait bâtir un fort pour protéger à la fois le passage entre les Glénan et la pointe de Trévignon, et les mouillages à lest. History
The island of Penfret is part of the Glénan archipelago, a strategic location for its fresh water wells and protected anchorages. The Lighthouse Commission and the Bridges and Roads service chose this location to establish the first light of the Glénan. Moreover, from 1825, the Coastal Defence commission wished to build a fort to protect both the passage between the Glénan and the point of Trévignon, and the anchorages to leeward. The work on the lighthouse began in 1836 and was completed in 1838. The fort was built from 1841 to 1847. In 1842, the Penfret battery was installed. A semi-circular battery with a rectangular redoubt incorporates the existing lighthouse. The crenellated enclosure of the fort thus becomes the base of the lighthouse. The lighthouse was electrified in 1951 and then automated in 1993. Since 2012, the upkeep of the fort has been entrusted to the association Plein Phare sur Penfret.
