In 1685, a project for fortification of the island is elaborated by Vauban, but only a tower will be built in 1699 by the architect Molard. The work consists of two adjoining towers, of different diameter, one containing the stores and the dwellings of the keepers as well as the hearth; the other containing the spiral staircase. The effectiveness of the lighthouse is real only at the end of the 18th century, the maintenance of the coal fire proving difficult. In 1783, the combustion hearth is replaced by a glazed lantern protecting lamps functioning thanks to a mixture of fish oil and rapeseed oil. In 1831, the lighthouse is equipped with a Fresnel lens. In 1926, this optics is replaced by another more powerful. Construction of annexes in the 19th century.
