Léon Legendre a gagné le concours d'architecture organisé en 1897 par la ville pour la construction du théâtre. Les travaux ont débuté en 1901 et l'inauguration a eu lieu en 1903. Le théâtre juxtapose des bâtiments différents (vestibule, salle et scène) , ce que révèle la volumétrie des différentes parties couvertes de zinc et munies de dômes. Il offre deux façades monumentales sur la place de l'hôtel de ville, la principale en brique et bossage de pierre étant composée d'une grande arcade cintrée munie d'un balcon et ornée de bustes dus au sculpteur Albert Miserey. L'utilisation du métal a permis de dégager le vaste volume de la salle à deux niveaux de balcons et coupole à ouverture zénithale, cette structure étant masquée par un décor de stucs peints et dorés. Le grand foyer est orné de stucs et de peintures marouflées dues à Charles Denet. L'iconographie de l'ensemble décline de manière traditionnelle le thème du théâtre. Cet édifice illustre la manière dont la ville a voulu vers 1900 achever une composition urbaine, en construisant un monument public et en faisant appel aux artistes locaux. Ce théâtre remanié rencontre divers désordres structurels, un programme de restauration générale est toutefois envisagé.

History
Léon Legendre won the architectural competition organized in 1897 by the city for the construction of the theatre. Works began in 1901 and the inauguration took place in 1903. The theatre juxtaposes different buildings (vestibule, auditorium and stage), which is revealed by the volumetry of the different parts covered in zinc and equipped with domes. It presents two monumental façades on the town hall square, the principal one in brick and stone rustication being composed of a large round arch fitted with a balcony and decorated with busts by sculptor Albert Miserey. The use of metal made it possible to clear the vast volume of the two-storied auditorium with balconies and dome with zenithal opening, this structure being masked by decoration of painted and gilded stucs. The grand foyer is adorned with stucs and mural paintings due to Charles Denet. The iconography of the entire complex sets out in traditional manner the theme of the theatre. This building illustrates the way the city wished around 1900 to complete urban composition, by constructing a public monument and calling upon local artists. This remodelled theatre experiences various structural disorders, a programme of general restoration is nonetheless envisaged.
