Creusement d'un canal de dérivation de la Dordogne décidé en 1837 ; plans confiés à l'ingénieur Vauthier ; travaux adjugés à des entrepreneurs de Bordeaux. Chantier commencé en 1838, canal ouvert en 1844. Canal utilisé jusqu'à la seconde guerre mondiale malgré la concurrence du chemin de fer à partir de 1879. Propriété de l'Etat, mais concession à un syndicat intercommunal qui en assure l'exploitation et l'entretien.

History
Excavation of a diversion canal of the Dordogne decided in 1837; plans entrusted to engineer Vauthier; works awarded to contractors from Bordeaux. Work site begun in 1838, canal opened in 1844. Canal used until the Second World War despite competition from the railway from 1879. State property, but concession to an intercommunal union which ensures its operation and maintenance.
