The calvary of the town of Trégastel was erected between February and August 1872 at the initiative of the parish priest, Jean-Jacques Bouget (1804-1877), who called upon the local population both in terms of labour and financing. The work is part of a programme put in place by the abbé shortly after his arrival in the commune in 1866, consisting of creating the union of inhabitants and encouraging them to prayer by mobilizing them around several federating building projects. Located at the highest point of the commune, this monumental calvary resembles a way of the cross traced through a kind of mineral chaos formed by the arrangement of locally extracted granite blocks, and punctuated by small oratories sheltering statues of saints and religious sentences in the Breton language. The whole is dominated by a large cross re-erected after 1912 - the original one had been destroyed by lightning - at the top of a high pyramidal base constructed with dressed stones with rustication. A singular work in a deliberately "rustic" style, this eloquent testimony to abbé Bouget's evangelizing mission is, beyond its identification with the history of Trégastel and the geology of the Côte de granit rose, a true unicum on the scale of Brittany.
