Historique

History
The Berry Canal was designed between 1809 and 1841 by the Ponts et Chaussées engineer Dutens in order to unify and densify the existing network over the entire territory. Its traffic is linked to the presence of establishments built along its course, that of the Loire and those of neighbouring canals. It supplies them with raw materials and dispatches finished products. The Tranchasse aqueduct bridge is built between 1829 and 1834 from a project dated 1822, drawn up by engineer Vauvilliers. The structure, entirely in masonry, measures 96 metres long and comprises eight arches. Designed originally for a single barge lane, the trough is widened in 1872 to allow two ships to pass. In December 1878, the downstream head of the aqueduct bridge detaches itself from the body of the vaults. Tie rods terminated by cast-iron anchors are installed to consolidate the walls of the trough.
