Historique

History
The château of Ainay-le-Vieil is one of the best preserved feudal fortresses of the 14th century. Built around 1330-1340 for Jean de Sully, it presents itself in the form of a vast polygonal enclosure with eight faces. It passed in the 15th century to the family of Culan who leased it for a few months to Jacques Cour. It was acquired in 1467 by the family of Bigny. Around 1510, Claude de Bigny, governor of the Bastille, and his wife, Jacqueline de L'Hôpital, had the main dwelling built, in place of the old buildings, to the north-east of the enclosure. The château, put up for sale as national property at the Revolution, remained without an owner until the middle of the 19th century. The general restoration of the buildings (very ruined during the long period of vacancy) was undertaken between 1855 and 1858. The entrance portal dates from the second Renaissance. The two pavilions are of the Louis XIII period (early 17th century). The first garden dates from the early 17th century, then was laid out as a landscape park in the middle of the 19th century. The chartreuses of the Montreuils which border to the west the canal and the vegetable garden are, with the latter, the most interesting elements of the gardens of Ainay. The construction of this structure may date from the first half of the 19th century.
