Cette statue de Louis XIV, réalisée par Louis Petitot en 1828, s'inscrit, sous la Restauration, dans le contexte national du rétablissement sur les places publiques des effigies royales abattues au cours de la Révolution. Une première statue du roi réalisée par le sculpteur Postel a existé de 1685 à 1791. La statue colossale (3, 66m) en bronze représente Louis XIV en empereur romain distribuant des couronnes de lauriers, représentation typique du courant néo-classique. Installée au départ Place Royale (actuelle place de la République) , l'œuvre fut déplacée plusieurs fois pour finir place Saint-Sauveur.

History
This statue of Louis XIV, created by Louis Petitot in 1828, fits, under the Restoration, in the national context of the re-establishment in public squares of royal effigies demolished during the Revolution. A first statue of the king created by the sculptor Postel existed from 1685 to 1791. The colossal statue (3.66m) in bronze represents Louis XIV as a Roman emperor distributing wreaths of laurels, a representation typical of the neo-classical movement. Installed initially at Place Royale (current place de la République), the work was moved several times to finally end up at place Saint-Sauveur.
