Historique
Le projet du monument aux morts de la guerre de 1914-1918, initié dès janvier 1916, est confié à Clara Saint René Taillandier. L'édifice est inauguré le 29 mai 1921. La construction du monument a requis quelques travaux de nivellement de la place ainsi que le déplacement de la vespasienne et de la fontaine-abreuvoir. Son iconographie met en scène des figures civiles féminines. L'inscription en provençal et le dessin profilé du mont des Alpilles dominant le village, révèlent l'attachement de l'artiste à son environnement local. L'uvre allie subtilement deux sortes de patriotisme. L'un, marqué par l'affliction et le deuil, est incarné par l'allégorie de la Ville sous les traits d'une Arlésienne ainsi que par une veuve et un enfant. L'autre symbolise un patriotisme conquérant sous la forme d'un groupe, gravé de manière discrète en bas-relief, de poilus combattant sous un drapeau déployé.

History
The project for the war memorial of 1914-1918, initiated as early as January 1916, was entrusted to Clara Saint René Taillandier. The edifice was inaugurated on 29 May 1921. The construction of the monument required some levelling work on the square as well as the displacement of the urinal and the fountain-watering trough. Its iconography features female civilian figures. The inscription in Provençal and the profiled drawing of the Mont des Alpilles dominating the village reveal the artist's attachment to her local environment. The work subtly combines two kinds of patriotism. One, marked by affliction and mourning, is embodied by the allegory of the City in the features of an Arlesienne as well as by a widow and a child. The other symbolizes a conquering patriotism in the form of a group, engraved discreetly in low relief, of poilus fighting under a deployed flag.
