In 1893, James Livesey gave the land on which Saint Michael's church was built the same year. The plans were drawn up by architect Temple Moore on a programme devised by Reverend Stephens who chose a historicist style with Italian inspiration. On the site, Moore was assisted by Aaron Messiah, himself aided by master mason Toussaint Giuge. The building of elongated plan consisted then of a simple nave covered with a barrel vault, access being gained through a porch applied to the gable. To close the nave, an apse covered with a half-dome housed the choir. The church was consecrated in January 1894. The three following years were devoted to interior fittings. As the crowning achievement of the work, the altarpiece painting depicting an Ascension by Ernesto Bellandi, the communion rail and the pulpit were installed in 1897. At the turn of the 20th century, the church, although recent, became too small for the growing English community. The enlargement project was then entrusted to Aaron Messiah who added to the building two aisles covered with edge ribs and a campanile. Furthermore, he raised the existing porch to form a portico which housed the organ gallery on the upper floor. This intervention definitively reinforced the neo-baroque character of the church. Work began in May 1903 and ended at the close of the year. Finally, the decoration was completed by the execution of painted decoration and four high reliefs in the choir between 1911 and 1913, the work of chaplain Bertrand Pleydell-Bouverie
